When you’re spending several thousand pounds on a new driveway, you want to know it’ll last. The short answer for resin bound: 25 years or more with quality products and proper installation. But the long answer is more nuanced — and worth understanding.
What Determines Lifespan?
A resin driveway’s longevity depends on four factors. Get all four right and your surface will outlast almost any alternative.
1. Resin Quality
Not all resin is equal. The key properties to look for:
- UV stability — cheap resins yellow within 2–3 years, making the surface look aged. Quality UV-stable resin (like Vuba’s) stays clear for decades.
- Flexibility — resin needs a degree of flex to cope with minor ground movement and temperature changes without cracking.
- Cure time and bond strength — premium resins create stronger bonds between the aggregate stones, reducing the chance of loose stones appearing.
This is why we use exclusively Vuba resin products. They’re formulated for the UK climate, UV-stable, and carry a 25-year manufacturer’s guarantee.
2. Sub-Base Quality
The biggest cause of resin driveway failure isn’t the surface — it’s what’s underneath. If the sub-base isn’t properly compacted, levelled and drained, the surface above will eventually crack as the ground shifts.
- We use a minimum 150mm compacted sub-base (often more on clay soils)
- Proper edge restraints prevent lateral movement
- Drainage is designed to prevent water sitting under the surface
3. Installation Technique
Resin bound must be mixed to exact ratios and applied at the correct temperature and thickness. Too thick and it won’t cure properly. Too thin and it’ll wear through. Applied in the wrong conditions (too cold, too wet, too hot) and the resin won’t bond correctly.
This is a craft — not just laying material. Experience matters enormously.
4. Aftercare
The good news: resin bound is one of the lowest-maintenance driveway surfaces available. But “low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance”.
Simple Aftercare Tips
- Sweep regularly — leaves and organic debris can stain the surface if left for weeks. A quick brush every month or so is enough.
- Power wash annually — a gentle pressure wash once a year keeps the surface looking fresh and ensures the pores stay open for drainage.
- Clean spills promptly — oil, paint or chemical spills should be blotted up and cleaned quickly. Resin is resistant but not immune to staining.
- Avoid point loads — car stands, skip feet and heavy stillages can indent the surface. Use load-spreading boards if needed.
- Don’t use salt for de-icing — rock salt can discolour the aggregate. Resin bound’s natural drainage means ice is rare anyway, but if you do need to de-ice, use a resin-safe product.
How It Compares to Other Surfaces
- Resin bound: 25+ years
- Block paving: 15–25 years (but needs regular re-sanding and weed treatment)
- Tarmac: 10–15 years before significant cracking and fading
- Concrete: 20–30 years (but cracks, stains, and looks industrial)
- Gravel: Needs topping up every 2–3 years, constant rut repair
- Resin bonded: 8–12 years (stones shed, not permeable)
